Important Questions to Ask Your Contractor

how to weed out bad contractors how to weed out bad contractors how to weed out bad contractors how to weed out bad contractors

1. How long have you been in business?

HomeSpec BasementFix has been in business since 1994. The name HomeSpec comes from "home inspection" which is what we've always specialized in. We have been waterproofing and repairing basements and crawl spaces in Southeast Michigan since the very beginning, which is why you can always trust us.

2. How many employees do you have?

HomeSpec has over 70 employees at our company between seven departments—management, sales, production, customer care, HR, permitting, and marketing. Among our crew, we have specific foreman who specialize is specific jobs. For example, our crack techs are responsible for and highly trained in repairing—you guessed it—cracks! We also have foremen specially trained in our PolyLevel system, which is a newer service that we offer. Despite being newer, Polyleveling is one of our most popular services!

We do not sub-contract the work that we do either. We respect the customer’s family, home, pets, and property, which is why we are dedicated to providing expert solutions with the highest quality materials, installed by trained professionals. This focus on putting customers first has made us one of the most awarded companies in our industry.

3. Are you accredited?

Yes we are. We have been accredited by the Better Business Bureau since 2009 and we even have an A+ rating! Our work speaks for itself. We can sit here and list all the awards we've won, or you can go read reviews straight from our happy customers on sites like Google, Home Advisor, Angie's List, and more!

We are also a part of the Basement Systems, CleanSpace, and Supportworks networks.

CleanSpace, a division of Basement Systems Inc., is the largest network of basement and crawl space contractors worldwide. Basement Systems was founded in 1987, and consists of a network of more than 300 dealerships. Supportworks is an international network of the most knowledgeable and experienced foundation repair contractors throughout North America. As part of these networks, we have access to the best products and training in the industry. We are not a franchise, but we are an independently owned and operated company that is united with these networks under the common goal of creating drier, healthier, and safer homes!

4. Do you offer a warranty? Do you offer financing?

Most of our products come with lifetime transferable warranties so you know your home will always be protected. We also offer many attractive financing options to our customers because we don’t believe any homeowner should suffer from a wet basement, a damaged foundation, or a wet or humid crawl space just because they can’t pay everything upfront.

5. What will the work look like?

During an inspection, don't hesitate to ask your inspector what the work will look like during and after the repair or installation. Some services are extensive, but we like to keep things squeaky-clean around here so you don't have to worry about the cleanup after a job is completed.

Tom F. from Ypsilanti said, "...I was incredibly impressed with how they managed to keep the dust under control and how clean the house remained throughout the process. No dust anywhere on first and second floors. I would recommend both the company and the crew that did our work."
